The benefits of big data have been seen in nearly every industry as organizations utilize the strategy to enhance decision-making and boost productivity among employees. However, these perks cannot be proven without taking a look at the individual use cases where big data was leveraged.
According to Government Technology contributor Jason Shueh, government groups have utilized informational analysis for a range of different products thanks to the advantages that come with the strategy.
“[S]tate and local governments have used analytics to relieve traffic congestion, monitor public utilities, evaluate and predict crime, follow education trends and keep tabs on public resources,” Shueh wrote. “And the bigness of analytics seems to be getting bigger too.”
When utilized within government agencies, big data analytics can bring a whole host of beneficial innovations, proven by a range of use cases. GCN contributor Shawn McCarthy noted that big data has been leveraged by the National Weather Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In fact, studying these previous use cases can help federal organizations better structure their big data projects through an examination of the techniques which worked well in other initiatives.
“Big data can mean big changes for the way government conducts its research and its ongoing business,” McCarthy wrote. “But in order to make that leap, understanding use cases can help IT managers look beyond their silos and their dedicated applications.
